After a two year hiatus, Justin Bieber’s long awaited new album “Purpose” was released on Friday, Nov. 13.

The album received much attention from the press due to it being released the same day as One Direction’s album. Despite the competition, Bieber’s album headed to number one on the iTunes Charts, and so did many of his songs including “Sorry” and “Love Yourself.” To promote his album, Justin invited fans to a spend a special evening with him at the Staples Center on the day of its release. He added two more shows that same night at the fan’s requests, showing just how highly anticipated the album was. Justin also released the dates for the first leg of his upcoming Purpose World Tour.

In Justin’s fourth studio album, the songs seem much different than his old hits like “Baby” and “One Time.” His old songs were great hits for the teenage pop star at the time, but his new songs show how his music has matured with his age. The entirety of the album has an electronic and futuristic sound and feel. While many songs are upbeat, the lyrics in each song are meaningful to what Bieber aimed to accomplish with his album: redemption. As many have come to know, the 21-year-old earned a bad reputation during the past few years. However, Justin used this album to help him get back on track. He even told Ellen Degeneres he titled it “Purpose” because it helped him find his again.

Justin Bieber’s album was preceded by the releases of his songs “Where Are Ü Now,” “What Do You Mean?” and “Sorry.” The first was his collaboration with Diplo and Skrillex that contains an unexpected mix of slower echoed and stuttered verses that then fade into dance and electronic beats. The second song features a steady and groovy beat great for the summertime with smooth vocals. The third song is filled with a variety of background sounds that give it a sort of jungle vibe, but Bieber is still able to highlight the range of his voice.

On the track “Purpose” the singer shows off the slower and deeper aspects of his album. In this tune, Bieber sings the lyrics “Ask you to forgive me for my sins, oh would you please?” It is impossible not to hear the emotion that he puts forth while he sings. He wants to show his fans that he wants to correct his past mistakes and follow his true purpose. The song ends with about a minute of Justin talking about his past while the beat of the song continues in the background.

Overall, Justin Bieber’s album is fresh and electronic. It showcases the vocals of the talented pop-star, while mixing edgy beats together. It features upbeat dance tunes as well as emotional and chilling songs that show how Bieber’s music is maturing just as he is growing older. It is an album that definitely deserves its spot at the top of the charts.
