Mater Dei football draws to a close after an undefeated season, the first time since 1996. The Monarchs went 10-0 through the 2016 season defeating Trinity league teams St. John Bosco, Orange Lutheran, JSerra and Servite. After the victory against the Bosco Braves Mater Dei become ranked number one in the nation with one of the top quarter-backs in the nation.

Many called the class of 2017 one of the greatest Mater Dei football teams in history, which was demonstrated during the season. By the end of the season, the team offensively crushed the boards with a total 7,557 all purpose yards. JT Daniels used starting wide receivers Bru McCoy, CJ Parks, Cam Gardner, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Osiris St. Brown to the best of their abilities making catches all season long. A combination of all the receivers made a total of 4854 yards with 67 touchdowns nearly doubling the amount of rushing touchdowns. JT Daniels threw an average of 346.7 yards per game which clearly helped in the end stacking points on the board to give the Monarchs a large lead around the second quarter.

On the other side of the ball, defense were also held up on a high pedestal.  Setting up a strong wall over any offense, the Monarchs accomplished a total of 718 tackles with 217 assists by putting the helmet to the ball. Unlike the offense, the Monarch defense did not gain as many yards. Then again gaining yards was not the goal. Stopping the offense in their tracks was their objective. They did so with numerous QB hurries and sacks totaling in a loss of 144 yards putting the Mater Dei offense in a better position to score. Interceptions also played a key role in the defense with seven during the whole season, two of which gave MD the win against the Bosco Braves in the regular season.

Although the games have come to a close there is still much to come from the Mater Dei football program. The perfect season will be put in the books only to be glorified and remembered by the Senior players and coaches of their prior achievements and as motivation for the the younger players to aim one step higher than the season before. More challenges will come with a whole new team with whole new outcomes.
