Film Review: Captive, a Story of Hope in the Midst of Darkness

Angel Zhu, Opinion Editor

Based on a true story, “Captive” is a double-take on a crime thriller and a story about faith and hope.

“Captive” stars Kate Mara as Ashley Smith, a meth-addicted mother, and David Oyelowo as Brian Nichols, a fugitive on-the- run. Both actors give solid performances in this film that proves to be more than just a religious movie, but an interesting watch for all audiences.

These two troubled, yet resilient souls come to an unlikely crossroad. Brian, who is originally imprisoned for raping his ex-girlfriend, shoots his way out of a courtroom murdering the judged and other bystanders. The entire city is placed on lockdown while Brian is on the run.

In a desperate attempt to outrun the law Brian holds Ashley hostage. In the seven hours Ashley was imprisoned in her own home by Brian, she experiences horror, distress and despair. The turning point for these characters occurs when Ashley uses a book she received as a support group meeting to create a bridge bridge between captive and the criminal. Ever so slightly, Brian is exposed to the saving grace of Christ through the words of “The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren.

Not only action-packed and sensational, but also faith-centered and inspiring, “Captive” is definitely a must-see.
