Mater Dei faces off against Sierra Canyon High School in a thrilling game at the Santa Ana Bowl. On Friday, Nov. 15, the Varsity Football Team dominated with a 33-13 victory, extending their undefeated season. With their sights set on another C.I.F. Senior Lucas Cruz and Junior Catherine Eddy hold up signs and food to promote Mater Dei’s annual Thanksgiving Outreach. On Thursday, Nov. 14, students at Mater Dei had the opportunity to donate non perishable food and gift cards for families in need this Thanksgiving. This food drive focuses primarily on the families in surrounding communities. Campus Ministry holds this act of kindness every year, and receives hundreds of canned goods and gift cards from the faculty, staff, and students at Mater Dei. “Mater Dei’s Thanksgiving Outreach has officially been extended and the deadline is now next week!” Director of Christian Service and Outreach Maurissa Talarico said. “There is still time to donate cans and gift cards to those in need this Thanksgiving. Students gather for a meeting in their courthouse attire before their first round Mock Trial competition. On Thursday, Nov. 7, Mater Dei Mock Trial members put their skills to the test at the Santa Ana Central Justice Center for the first time this year. Senior and Team Captain Anthony Pagone goes over coding for the robot with TJ Vasquez ‘24. From Nov. 1 to Nov. 3, the Beach Blitz Competition was held at Capistrano Valley High school, funded by the Gene Haas Foundation. This event is for high school robotics teams that belong in the FRC program. Each high school team is expected to bring their own robot to compete. The Mater Dei Robotics Team has worked hard this fall season to provide a robot for the competition and has gained great hands-on experience as well. The whole school gathers together for All Saints’ Day in a beautiful Mass to honor those who have passed away. PEMDAS & SADMEP: Senior Oliver Yang and Math Teacher Sean Lieblang pose together for a photo with stuffed animals. Lieblang’s stuffed animals, Pemdas and Sadmep, are two very important aspects of the Chapter 1 curriculum in Algebra 2/Trigonometry. These characters help ensure that the students remember the importance of simple algebra strategies. “Back in my sophomore year, Mr. Lieblang taught us about simplifying expressions and solving equations.” Yang said. “Whenever he spoke of PEMDAS and SADMEP specifically, I always thought about his two stuffed animals.”

THE FUTURE AWAITS In November 2024, 32 random high school seniors were surveyed on how confident they felt in terms of their life’s plans. The fairly diverse responses with an emphasis on confident life plans show that many seniors have a general idea of what they want to do in life, but that there is also beauty in the uncertainty. Senior Katherine Ruiz is open to whatever life has in store for her and hopes that she finds joy and success with her goals. “Believe it or not, I don’t have my whole life outlined down to the little details,” Ruiz said. “I hope I don’t remain stagnant in my life and instead work towards a goal of mine, whatever that may be.
