Skydiving: Why You Should Take the Leap of Faith

Addie Hermstad, Managing Editor

When I was younger, my dad and I went to iFly, where my cousin worked, and flew in the wind tunnel there. It was then, at age 10, that I knew, as soon as I turned 18, I would go skydiving. While skydiving has always been a dream of mine, I knew many other do not feel the same way about jumping out of a perfectly functioning plane, but here are five reasons why you should take the leap of faith.
1) You get to say you did it.
This is just simple bragging rights. It’s something not many people dare to do, and you get to say you did it! Imagine the pics that you can post to Instagram of your skydive.
2) It is beautiful to see the world while plummeting towards it.
I jumped from 18,000 feet with a minute and a half of free fall. My dive was in Santa Barbara, California so I could see the beautiful Pacific Ocean and the green ground below. It is simply beautiful to experience the Earth like that. One thing I did not expect about skydiving is that it doesn’t feel like you are falling, it feels like you’re flying. Since you are so high up, you have no perception of how fast you are falling.
3) You really aren’t going to die.
According to United States Parachute Association, 21 people out of 3.5 million jumps died skydiving in 2015 . Look at the infographic to see things that you should be more afraid of!
4) It’s an Adrenaline rush
As you jump, it’s hard for your brain to fully understand what is happening as you fall, and then you’ll think “Oh my gosh, I just jumped out of a plane.” It’s as crazy as it sounds. If you like excitement and adrenaline, you’ll want to try jumping out of a plane.
5) You’ll love it
And even if you don’t, you never have to do it again! But after I landed, I started researching how to get certified so I could jump all the time.
