Principal Frances Clare addresses the school during Mass and gave a heartfelt tribute to recently passed teacher, Marcos Corona and his exemplification of Honor, Glory, and Love. On Sept. 5, Mater Dei celebrated the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit in the Meruelo Athletics Center where alumnus Father Michael presided over Mass and gave an engaging homily. “Mass was beautifully celebrated, and I appreciated Fr. Sophomore Kayla Nguyen tees it up on the range, as she warms up for a tough match against Sage Hill High School. On Sept. 4, the Girls Varsity Golf Team took on Sage Hill High School at Strawberry Farms Golf Club. The Monarchs won 188 to 189, with senior Lauren Lee shooting the all around low-score of 33. “I think our team played to the best of our abilities, and we are very grateful to win. The Mater Dei student body celebrates the new school year by attending the Fall Rally. On Friday Aug. 30, ASB set up a fun sports rally with games and performances for the students and staff to enjoy. Mater Dei freshmen celebrate completing their first week of high school at the Freshman Dance. On Friday, Aug. 19 the new Monarchs had the opportunity to meet other classmates and kick-back at the Hawaiian themed dance. While there, many of the students made Hawaiian leis, participated in games, and danced with friends. Welcome back Monarchs! Mater Dei students head off campus after their first day back to school. Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 12 and Aug. 13 were the first days back to school for a new year. Assemblies were held to introduce freshmen and transfer students to Mater Dei, as well as refresh sophomores, juniors, and seniors about school expectations. “I had the most amazing first day. Filmmaking II students Andrew Roqueni and Matteo Dawson pose for the organization, Safe Streets Are For Everyone, red carpet affair. On May 4, the two attended the SAFE PSA awards ceremony along with their guide and mentor, Film and Media Arts Director Andrew Roberts. Although this is the first contest that Mater Dei’s filmmaking class has entered, Roqueni and Dawson represented the school with their great potential and confident abilities in creative cinematography. Dawson is grateful for the chance to celebrate these gifts and his love for creating. “The project was just really fun. I love filming, cameras, and everything like that,” Dawson said.
