Mater Dei Track runner and freshman Aidan Lynch wins the 400 meter race. The Trinity Lower Level track meet was held Friday, Apr. 21 at Santa Margarita High School. This was the last track meet of the season for the Junior Varsity and Frosh-Soph teams. Theatre students pose next to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. From Apr. 1 through Apr. 5, the Mater Dei Theatre Department traveled and explored the great sites in Manhattan, NY. The annual Holy Week Mass was held Tuesday, Mar. 26, where lessons of loyal friendship, devotion to God in hard times, and persistence of prayer was taught by Father Mark Cruz. This annual Mass reminds the Mater Dei community of the sacrifices of Christ, as he dies for us on the cross, and what we can do in our own lives as we carry our own cross. On Thursday, Mar. 21 students and faculty had the opportunity to participate in the Red Cross Blood Drive sponsored by Mater Dei. Throughout the past two days, Mater Dei has partnered with the Red Cross to help collect donations to assist those in need. In previous years, over 150 units of blood were donated, saving nearly 500 lives. Similarly, this year students and faculty have gathered to donate and fulfill Red Cross’s slogan, “Give blood. Save Lives.” “I have volunteered to give blood because Red Cross has reached out requesting donations...not only do I get to give blood, I was going to do it for extra credit also,” sophomore Kyle Pitaknarongphorn said.

On Thursday, Mar. 14, the freshmen were able to wear spirit dress for raising the highest amount of money during the auction class basket contest. The contest took place back in February, at the all-school auction, A Taste of Mater Dei. “One thing I personally enjoy about spirit dress is being able to wear clothes more comfortable than our daily uniform,” freshman Sumayah Owens said. “In addition, winning this year’s auction was honestly a surprise to me. The Mater Dei Boys Soccer team took to the practice field prior to their CIF State semifinals matchup versus Del Norte. The team’s practice and preparation paid off as they won with a score of 3-0. “We have one job and it’s to win both CIF and state,” senior Eli Garza said. The Mater Dei Swim Team warms up before their meet. On Monday, Feb. 26, both boys and girls teams took on Huntington Beach High School with JV taking home a win. The ambiance was enthusiastic with an impressive sense of school pride as students congregated to watch and support their fellow classmates. “As a freshman at the school, it is exciting and warming to see that students here support each other”, freshman Katelyn Flagherty said.
