Victoria Hoang is a freshman at Mater Dei High School and a first-year staff reporter for The Scarlet Scroll. Hoang is fun and loving and likes to befriend new people whenever she has the opportunity. Hoang enjoys talking to people and loves listening to stories. Make sure to say hi if you see her around.

According to the MIT students' presentation, "only 14% of girls want to become a scientist." The MIT Women's Initiative hopes to change that and motivates girls to pursue topics that makes them passionate. "I know I'm not a miracle worker, but my main goal in coming to Orange County was to get students, particularly young women, excited about what STEM can be," Heyes said.

MIT students Jane Heyes and Tooba Shahid introduce themselves to a group of female students on Jan. 22. Heyes is currently a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and Shahid is a undergraduate freshman majoring in biomedical engineering.

Students are introduced to different aspects of STEM during the presentation. Careers that were presented were aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, petroleum engineering, and computer programming.

There are many different types of STEM majors that were shown during the presentation.

On September 9th, 2017, at about 11:30 students began rushing out of their Block 6 classrooms to find a orange sky greeting them as the walk to their next class. Students began receiving Amber alerts and text messages informing them of the Canyon 2 Fire.
