Lenten Promises

Lent is a time of fasting, giving and praying in preparation for Easter. During this time, we are reminded of the meaning of Lent in our Religious Studies classes, but most students are still more concerned with another aspect of it. Lent is 40 days where students fast from some of their favorite things.

Senior Kayla Butler said, “I’m giving up all junk food for Lent. I want to eat healthier.”

These 40 days is not only a sacrifice that reminds us of Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice, but also promotes a healthier lifestyle.

“I’m giving up three things: soda, sweets, and fried food,” Senior Ryley Day said,

Junk food can be a little too challenging for some people. Instead many, like Day, decided to give up categories of junk food instead.

But junk food isn’t the only thing Mater Dei students are giving up for Lent. Some students are dedicating themselves to doing something more. Micaela Daley said, “I want to get more sleep, hopefully 8 hours or more a night.”

Some other popular things Mater Dei students are doing are going to the gym more, focusing better in class and spending more time with family.

Tania Urquidez said, “It’s been hard so far. I gave up coffee for Lent and I haven’t broken since, but I am a lot more tired in the mornings.”
