HOT COCOA IN COLD WEATHER Seniors Kalani Kunimura (far right) and Dalton Bulowski (second right) celebrate the holiday season with a cup of hot cocoa, handed out by the Parent Association Council during upper lunch. On Monday, Dec. 2, Monarchs kicked off the Christmas Spirit Week, transforming the campus into a Winter Wonderland with festive all-white snow day outfits. “It’s awesome to celebrate Christmas culture with the Mater Dei community,” Bulowski said.

Celebrating Earth Day
WITH WIDE ARMS: Senior Kira Imhoff, in the role of Ariel, yells as senior London Coco Griffin, playing Prospero, looks on with pride. Throughout the play, Imhoff performed musical solos as Prospero’s servant spirit. “It felt so refreshing to return to in-person plays,” Imhoff said. “Having an audience to interact with made theatre feel like theatre again. I felt so blessed to be doing live theatre with an amazing cast and crew. Everyone killed it and I was so happy to work with them. You should have seen Mrs. Slay, [she] was so enthusiastic and pumped to get back.”

MUSICAL INSPIRATION: Paige Buttaccio (left), a rising senior, paints her reserved parking spot that is inspired by a cassette tape. Buttaccio worked with a friend to make the spot represent both a mixtape and her love of music. “I feel like I always listen to music at school and it gets me through stuff, so I wanted to include it in my spot,” Buttaccio said.

"I will never [forget] Francis Clare's words to me at a rally as a [freshman], 'before you know it you will be walking down at the Bren Center', and oh man [to] have these years flown by and it's finally here," Nordheim said. "I am thankful for everything Mater Dei has done for me and the opportunities that have opened doors, and for the people here especially Ms. Steves, Mrs. Pank, Coach Marquez, Mrs. Kitsinis and many more for their dedication."

DECK THE HALLS To celebrate the Christmas spirit, the grotto was dressed up with Christmas trees, garlands, and lampposts in order to spread the contagious holiday spirit. A LEGACY LIVES ON Freshman Liam Estrada and junior Alice Eskander pose with the Barajas family after being awarded the Anthony Barajas Scholarship on Nov. 1, 2024. Mater Dei offers various scholarships for students that specialize in different areas of interest. Commemorated to honor the life of Anthony Barajas ‘19, this scholarship is open to students involved in both athletics and performing arts who use their God-given gifts for kindness. After winning this scholarship, Eskander hopes to carry on Barajas’ legacy by continually striving to help others each and every day. “I felt truly honored when I found out I was awarded with the Anthony Barajas Scholarship,” Eskander said. “Receiving this award encouraged me to remember Anthony in my everyday life and increase my efforts towards making sure that everyone feels loved and included in my everyday life just as he did.” Photo courtesy of Alice Eskander.

A STAFF TO REMEMBER Seniors from the 2022-2023 staff of The Scarlet Scroll and the CROWN Yearbook pose for a photo at their end of the year banquet, commemorating the amazing year they had filled with well-written articles, fantastic photos, and immense amounts of teamwork. Many of the seniors, now alum, look back on their time in Student Publications, not only learning about journalism, but about themselves. Many of them feel as if they were like family, growing friendships they always know they can turn back to. “The Scarlet Scroll not only gave me so many great memories and friends while at Mater Dei, but taught me so much about the journalism world and myself,” Ashworth said. The Alumni of Student Publications: An Update
LATIN ON ANOTHER LEVEL Senior Maya Fischbein presents her project on the Vettii Brothers, who were freedmen in the Roman Empire. In Honors Latin 4, several students are assigned to present information on various prominent members of Ancient Roman society. Fischbein developed a presentation on the Vettii Brothers, two freedmen who worked their way up through Roman society despite their circumstances. This unit was paired with the study of fables, which Fischbein enjoys because they remind her of her childhood. “My favorite thing so far is learning about the fables,” Fischbein said. “I remember these stories from when I was younger, so it is interesting to learn their origins and translations.”
