Mater Dei students not only excel in academics and athletics but have also mastered balance, spending free time enjoying their vibrant surroundings. Orange County (OC) offers an abundance of fun activities, from bustling shopping centers to unique seasonal events, giving students plenty of ways to relax, connect, and make memories outside of school.
Sophomore Amy Vutran is enrolled in difficult classes and has a rigorous schedule, so she highlights how exploring OC’s iconic spots helps her unwind after a busy week.
“I like to go around to different theme parks, like Disneyland,” Vutran said. “I also like to go to the [Irvine] Spectrum to go shopping. It’s a lot of fun.”
The Irvine Spectrum Center is a favorite destination among many students for its shopping, dining, and entertainment options. The open-air mall features a mix of high-end and casual retail stores, a massive Ferris wheel, and a lively atmosphere that makes it a go-to spot for Mater Dei students. Sophomore Kaden Johnson frequently visits the Spectrum with his friends after school.
“I love going to the Spectrum because it has everything in one place,” Johnson said. “One minute, I’m shopping at Nike or PacSun, and the next, I’m grabbing boba from Meet Fresh or getting food at The Cheesecake Factory. There’s always something to do.”
Beyond shopping and dining, the Spectrum offers entertainment like the Regal Irvine Spectrum theater, where students can catch the latest movies; and Dave & Buster’s, a hotspot for arcade games and fun group outings. The center’s festive decorations and live music make it an even more exciting place to visit during the holidays.
“I go to the Spectrum almost every weekend, and during winter, it’s even better because of all the lights and decorations,” sophomore Daniel Woore said. “It really makes you feel like you’re in the holiday spirit.”
Another big seasonal event that draws students in is the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa. Known for its thrilling carnival rides, live performances, and unique food options—like deep-fried Oreos and giant turkey legs—the OC Fair is a summer tradition for many.
“The OC Fair is my favorite event of the year,” Johnson said. “I always go with my friends, and we try all the crazy food. My go-to is the funnel cake—it’s a must-have.”
For students looking for something different, the fair also hosts concerts and competitions, providing an experience that goes beyond just rides and food.
“It’s not just about the fair itself,” Woore said. “The concerts, the games, and just the overall energy make it a really cool place to hang out.”
When it comes to relaxing indoors, nothing beats a movie night. OC boasts plenty of theaters, and Mater Dei students have their favorites. Boyle prefers the AMC Theater in Orange for its convenience, while Delaney enjoys the Regal Theater for its premium features.
“Regal has a really good setup and the best popcorn,” Delaney said. “It’s always a good time.”
With these theaters just a short drive from campus and featured throughout Orange County in the many prominent malls, students can easily catch the latest blockbusters after a day of classes or practice. The proximity of so many attractions—from shopping and dining at the Irvine Spectrum to skating at Anaheim Ice—means students can reach many of their favorite spots in less than 20-30 minutes.
“I can stay entertained for hours, whether it’s skating, shopping, or just hanging out with friends,” Delaney said. “It’s all about finding what you enjoy and making the most of it.”
For Mater Dei students, life outside of school is about more than just fun activities—it’s about building connections, relieving stress, and enjoying the vibrant OC lifestyle.
“At the end of the day, it’s about spending time with people who make these experiences special,” Vutran said. “Whether it’s running, shopping, or just enjoying a meal, it’s the people who make it worthwhile.”
With endless options for entertainment and relaxation, Orange County gives Mater Dei students the perfect backdrop for balancing school and leisure, ensuring every moment is as rewarding as it is memorable.
