Students gather to spread some Christmas cheer during lunch on Monday, Dec. 4. They showed off their Christmas spirit by singing along to the festive karaoke activity provided by ASB. The Mater Dei Girls' Varsity Water Polo Team had a strong start as they played their first game of the season. Mater Dei and Long Beach Wilson went head-to-head a the Monarch home pool on Wednesday, Nov. 29. The girls experienced their first win of the year, finishing with a final score 14-11. Junior Charlotte de Leon is the Managing Editor for The Scarlet Scroll Newspaper. This is her second year being a part of the staff. De Leon is involved in Mater Dei’s Choral and Vocal Music program, as well as Campus Ministry and ASB Commission. In her free time, she takes interest in poetry, reading books, and journaling. Mater Dei's Varsity Mock Trial Team prepares for the next rounds of CRF, as they reflect on the rounds from the previous week. This year, the team hopes to make it far as they have been putting in a lot of effort and time into this year's case. In his free time, Yang likes to monitor stocks such as NASDAQ and is president of the Entrepreneurship Club. He is also involved in Team China Lacrosse. Mater Dei Theatre opens their production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. On Nov. 9 the company prepared with vocal warmups, hair and makeup application, and got into costumes for the first of four shows. Mater Dei senior athletes show off their university hats during National Signing Day. On Wednesday, Nov. 8, senior athletes gathered to sign with their soon to be colleges in celebration of their recent commitments. Many of these young athletes look forward to playing for their chosen sports at the universities they plan to attend. “As a coach, watching your sailors reach new heights is incredibly rewarding. Mater Dei Student Publications members tour the city of Boston and tune into their first Journalism sessions of the trip. On Nov. 3 the group was invited to the top of the John Hancock Tower to get an amazing view of the city and went to visit the beautiful Boston Public Library. Families from local elementary schools and student volunteers celebrate Halloween together in the Grotto at Mater Dei’s “Trunk o’ Treat” on Saturday, Oct. 28. Senior Mai Truong holds up her pink ribbon to show her support for the victims of breast cancer. On Monday, Oct. 27 students had the opportunity to purchase pink ribbons from Campus Ministry to raise money and to raise cancer awareness. Students with pink ribbons will also allow to wear pink spirit dress on Monday, Oct. 30. EXPLORING THE CITY Members of Mater Dei Student Publications pose for a photo near the clock tower at Boston College. From Nov. 1-Nov. 5, several students enrolled in Newspaper and Yearbook classes had the opportunity to visit Boston and learn more about the publications process through a journalism convention as well as sightseeing around the historic city. “Going out and exploring things is an opportunity given by Mater Dei for a lot of courses, [and] being able to go to Boston and learn about a class I’m very interested in is always a pleasure,” senior Jordan St. John said.
