Banned Book Week featured in the library this week

For the first time, Banned Book Week is being observed at Mater Dei with a week-long display in the library.
According to Director of Innovative Programs Molly Chace, the purpose of featuring Banned Book Week is to raise awareness about the dangers of censorship.
“I want the students to be shocked,” she said.
Whether for class or for fun, most Mater Dei students read many of the books that have been banned in the past. Chace hopes that a display of banned books will spark conversation, get students curious and get them to ask questions.
There are a number of banned books that might come as a surprise to students because of how popular they are now. The library’s project encourages students to look at these books from a different perspective.

Well written article. The purpose of education is to provoke thought, and stimulate intelligent debate in order to formulate good policy and social advancement. I am so glad to see our Mater Dei students exploring these great literary works.
