Mater Dei Boys Volleyball Takes Flight Over Los Alamitos Griffins
April 29, 2016
On Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at 7:00 pm in the Meruelo Athletic Center at Mater Dei High School, varsity boys volleyball trumped the Los Alamitos boys team in 3 sets. This was a huge victory for the Monarchs, having lost to Los Alamitos the past two consecutive years.
“Our motivation for earning every single point led us to our strong win tonight,” said Head Coach Pat Connolly after the game.
Mater Dei’s energy and excitement coming into the game engendered their 3 set shut down against the Griffins. Mater Dei boys volleyball has faced defeat against Los Alamitos in past years, however this win for the Monarchs ended the losing streak. Los Al’s defense wasn’t ready for the Monarchs’ offensive hits. This victory over the Griffins marks a strong start to the Monarchs’ season.
Three time team captain and junior Garret Zolg said, “It all depends on how far we want to take it ourselves.”
As the season continues, the boys volleyball team has a greater goal than just winning some matches.
“Our major goal this season is to win CIF for Spencer, and for each other as we try to finish the season strong,” said senior Sterling Miles.
The Mater Dei boys volleyball team hopes for a great season and a CIF title.

![BUILDING THE FUTURE: Plans to build tennis courts and a new Performing Arts Center will be started and completed in the coming years. This will benefit students and athletes alike as they will enhance both the Athletic and Performing Arts Departments and bring much-needed venues and state-of-the-art spaces to campus. “You want to be rooted in that tradition of the school when [it comes to] these projects, we’ve always got to be innovating and moving forward,” Vice President of School Relations Scott Melvin said. ![GET UP Students laugh and dance at a school rally. All the events and rallies hosted by ASB help bring students together and make school an enjoyable place to be. Senior Maddy O’Connor believes ASB keeps everything together and the school spirit alive. “A lot of things wouldn't be as organized [without ASB] and it'd be kind of boring,” O’Connor said. “ASB brings joy to Mater Dei, and pretty much [all things] cool.”](https://thescarletscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HEIF-Image-1200x800.jpeg)
