A Walk Down Memory Lane
Students have the opportunity to share the Monarch experience with their grandparents
October 27, 2016
Mater Dei’s annual Grandparent’s day is an opportunity for students for share their school experience with their family.
The first Grandparents’ Day was held on October 12 in the Library from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The February 9 Grandparents’ day will also be held in the Library from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Grandparent guests will enjoy a special meal with their grandchild, a visit to one class, and a special Mass for grandparents and grandchildren hosted in the Chapel. They will be also sent home with the famous Mater Dei High School cookies.

“I was really close with my grandmother, and I wish that I had had the opportunity to show her Mater Dei,” said Allison Bergeron, Director of Planned Giving and Major Gifts Office.
This is a special opportunity for students and their grandparents to spend time with each other and create memories together. Typically 75 to 100 grandparents attend the event and a few happen to be Mater Dei alumni.
“I always tell grandparents on Grandparents’ Day, they have the opportunity to be a grandparent to a lot of students that don’t have grandparents,” said Erica Adams, Vice President of Advancement.

The Grandparents’ Day tradition was started in 2010 by Bergeron, and has continued ever since. Some of our competing schools have also started to involve grandparents into some of their events as well.
“There is really a lot of magic that happens on campus during the day for them to be able to experience with you guys,” Bergeron said, “…it’s just a totally different perspective.”

![BUILDING THE FUTURE: Plans to build tennis courts and a new Performing Arts Center will be started and completed in the coming years. This will benefit students and athletes alike as they will enhance both the Athletic and Performing Arts Departments and bring much-needed venues and state-of-the-art spaces to campus. “You want to be rooted in that tradition of the school when [it comes to] these projects, we’ve always got to be innovating and moving forward,” Vice President of School Relations Scott Melvin said. ![GET UP Students laugh and dance at a school rally. All the events and rallies hosted by ASB help bring students together and make school an enjoyable place to be. Senior Maddy O’Connor believes ASB keeps everything together and the school spirit alive. “A lot of things wouldn't be as organized [without ASB] and it'd be kind of boring,” O’Connor said. “ASB brings joy to Mater Dei, and pretty much [all things] cool.”](https://thescarletscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HEIF-Image-1200x800.jpeg)
