The tradition of selling pink shirts at Mater Dei in October approximately started about three years ago. With “InspiRED” on the back of each shirt, pinks shirts have been a popular student favorite each year and have inspired students to live in Honor, Glory, and Love.
The selling of pink shirts was created by Director of Student Activities Diana Neustadt & Associate Director of Student Activities Jeanette Costa to support a fellow co-worker, Griselda Zamora, who passed away from breast cancer.
For the last two years, the proceeds were donated to support her family with the expenses. However, starting in 2016, the proceeds gathered from pinks shirts will be donated to a scholarship fund created in honor of Griselda Zamora.
Usually sold in October because of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Mater Dei’s pink shirts have been spreading support and awareness for breast cancer by those who have purchased them. With the accumulation of two t-shirt designs over the past three years, this tradition of pink shirts will continue to be a legacy that honors those and their families who have been affected with breast cancer.

![BUILDING THE FUTURE: Plans to build tennis courts and a new Performing Arts Center will be started and completed in the coming years. This will benefit students and athletes alike as they will enhance both the Athletic and Performing Arts Departments and bring much-needed venues and state-of-the-art spaces to campus. “You want to be rooted in that tradition of the school when [it comes to] these projects, we’ve always got to be innovating and moving forward,” Vice President of School Relations Scott Melvin said. ![GET UP Students laugh and dance at a school rally. All the events and rallies hosted by ASB help bring students together and make school an enjoyable place to be. Senior Maddy O’Connor believes ASB keeps everything together and the school spirit alive. “A lot of things wouldn't be as organized [without ASB] and it'd be kind of boring,” O’Connor said. “ASB brings joy to Mater Dei, and pretty much [all things] cool.”](https://thescarletscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HEIF-Image-1200x800.jpeg)
