Through senior musical, students create lasting memories

Seniors took the stage for this year’s senior musical Seussical! from April 26 through April 29. The play is based off of various Dr. Seuss works including The Grinch and Horton Hears a Who.
Senior ensemble members Sofia Guzman and Jagari (Jag) Jennings had different reasons for wanting to be involved in the show.
“I joined senior musical because it looked really fun,” Guzman said. “All of my friends were doing it and so I wanted to hang out with them and create new memories with them before we graduate.”
However, Jennings was influenced by past seniors to join.
“I joined senior musical because all of the seniors from previous years have told me it was one of the most fun things they did at Mater a Dei,” he said.
Guzman and Jennings were both excited to see the set come to life. Guzman was especially excited because she had a line in the play and had never acted before.
“I never thought that I would actually have a part in the musical,” she said. “It’s exciting to have a mic. It makes you feel important.”
The seniors involved in the show had been practicing for months on end for long hours at a time. At the beginning when they were first learning basic choreography and songs, they practiced for four hours at a time on Saturdays and several times during the week after school in the choir room. As opening night got closer, practices became more frequent.
Guzman and Jennings said they loved hanging out with their friends and making new memories during these long rehearsals.
“My favorite part about it [was] interacting with the people I’ve been in the same class as for four years but never met until now,” Jennings said.
Guzman was also very enthusiastic about performing and being creative on stage. She and Jennings both loved to perform and dance to “Oh, the Things You Can Think.”
“I [got] to sing, dance, and laugh with my friends for hours,” Guzman said. “It [was] so much fun doing senior musical with them.”

The two said that what they will cherish most is their time with their friends and the memories they’ve made.
“I am going to miss all of the people I’ve met and made friends with during senior musical,” Jennings said.
