THE REAL PRESENCE Eucharistic Adoration is held in the Chapel every Friday during both lunches, allowing the opportunity for students to spend time with Jesus. This fosters a love for God throughout the Mater Dei community, which ultimately contributes to the worldwide Eucharistic Revival that is taking place in the Catholic Church.

WITNESS SWEARS IN Sophomore attorney, Angela Karanja, temporarily plays the role of bailiff to swear in Junior witness, Anthony Laguna, during a mock trial scrimmage for the Gray Team. To ensure that witnesses do not lie or make up scenarios that are not from the case packet, they swear to tell the complete truth in both their direct and cross examinations. “My favorite part of mock trial is the experience of learning how a real court case works with my friends, and people I look up to,” Karanja said.

Coach Rollinson stands with the team he created and his grandson Matthew at the game on Friday, Sept 2 versus Corona Centennial. The year 2023 serves as Coach Rollinson’s 34th year as Head Coach of the Monarch Football Team. He has led the team to win eight CIF Championships, four state titles, and the National Championship in 1994, 1996, 2017, 2018, and 2021. Rollinson loves to have his family with him at games, and the week prior when Mater Dei played Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas his grandson made a very important decision. “Matthew is seven and he looked at me and I say ‘What’s wrong?’ Rollinson said. “I knew he had apprehension and I didn’t want to force him and I didn’t want him to feel uncomfortable, it had to be his decision. And I wanted him to make that decision. He finally said, ‘I’m gonna do it.’ And I replied, ‘What are you gonna do?’ He said, ‘Can I be a ball boy?’ And I said, ‘Yes.’ He loved it. I mean, I’m sitting there going this is pretty cool. We are at a major football game and my grandson is the ball boy- life is good.”

WORKING FOR THE PRESS: Kristen Castillo ‘18 sports Arizona State University’s signature “forks up” sign in The State Press newsroom. After graduation, Castillo chose to join The State Press as a staff reporter, and appreciates the experience she received while at Mater Dei. “[Running a newspaper in college] is the same exact situation,” Castillo said. “[The newspaper] is completely student run. We are at the expense of our peers, which is really cool.”

ACTING THE ANNOYANCE: Sarah Castillo portrays the character Caliban getting teased by nymphs in Mater Dei Theatre’s production of The Tempest. In China, she performed in plays as well, one of which required her to learn how to say her lines while eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. She has continued to expand her acting repertoire while in the States, “I’ve always been interested in theatre, but I started getting into Shakespeare when I came to the US,” Castillo said. “I’ve always, ever since I can remember, been involved with theatre and performing.”

STUDYING HISTORY WHILE LIVING THROUGH IT: Sophomore Willow Laws works on a history worksheet on her iPad at home on Oct. 13. Laws’ history class, taught by Justin Deskovick, is considered an asynchronous class where she is given assignments and assessments to complete on her own on time and is self-paced for students fully online. “I feel like I’ve gotten used to [online school] but it is still a little weird,” Laws said. “I only have Zoom classes for two of my classes [Religion and Spanish] so I haven’t really seen who my teachers are yet. I feel like I can make it work because all of my teachers are always emailing me and reaching out to me.”

FAITH, FAMILY, TEAM: Doran watches her practice opponents as they wrestle each other and waits for her turn to go up against them. The wrestling team motto is “faith and family”. “You go out there as an individual but all together its a team sport because you help each other get better and you motivate each other,” Doran said. “In the end, when I win, I not only do it for myself but for my coaches and for my team.”
