DRESSED AND READY Sophomores Isabella Waddington and Sylvie Ceran are seen conversing by the Grotto. Both students wear the Mater Dei uniform and their student ID cards, along with the appropriate, student handbook required minimum length of the skirt. “In my opinion, the uniforms at Mater Dei are the highlight of going here,” Ceran said. STUDENTS IN JOURNALISM Senior Ava Gomez and junior Leo Tordera read over the Mater Dei student-led publications: The CROWN Yearbook and The Scarlet Scroll Newspaper. Reviewing previous publications allows students to get a head start, learning journalistic skills, such as writing and conducting interviews, that can carry them through their professional careers. The compilation includes stories that represent both the student body as a whole, as well as highlighting world events that have an impact on the Monarch community. “Telling stories is important,” senior Sam De Guzman said. “The Scarlet Scroll has opened the world of journalism up to me.” Photo taken by Sam De Guzman.

ROBOTICS GIVES BACK The Mater Dei’s Robotics Team visited Cristo Rey High School this year for their annual outreach. They were able to share valuable information and resources with the students there, helping bring S.T.E.M. to an underfunded school. By doing this, they hope to spark new interests in students attending school, and open them up to a world they may not be familiar with yet. Photo courtesy of Brother Joseph Anoop.

ONE WITH THE ARTS Many students become involved in the arts by joining Mater Dei’s choir program, consisting of many different choirs and vocal groups. Students such as Acevedo and Lee have grown to become part of the choir community. They have gained so many opportunities and made some strong connections.

NEW FACE OF MATER DEI: Michael Brennan was announced the new president of Mater Dei High School on Jan. 7, 2022. After long-time president Patrick Murphy retired, the position was held by Father Steve Sallot before Father Walter Jenkins was hired. After Jenkins returned to Notre Dame for a special assignment, Brennan applied for and received the position and has now been part of the Mater Dei community for over a year.

FROM FRESHMAN TO SENIOR: Senior Laila Abdulla stands to the right of her freshman self. As she prepares to graduate, Abdulla is excited to finish her senior year and begin pursuing her passion of dramatic writing. Though beginning to suffer from Senioritis, Abdulla is happy to be finishing off her high school career at Mater Dei. “[Senioritis] is nothing more than an uncomfortable feeling that’s just part of growing up.” Abdulla said. “It doesn’t need a solution, it’s just something to complain about that seniors can bond over.”
