Spoiler warning: This article contains major plot points from Stranger Things that may reveal key moments within the show.
The final season of Stranger Things has brought excitement, enthusiasm, and, for many, a bittersweet conclusion to a show that filled the childhood of countless students across campus. Weeks before the first volume’s anticipated release on Nov. 26, 2025, fans eagerly awaited the return as teasers and sneak-peaks gave way to a multitude of theories and easter eggs. The first batch of episodes would explore the military’s quarantine of the town of Hawkins, and the main characters’ preparation for their final standoff against the main villain, Vecna. The show’s exceptionally high reputation and established legacy gradually intensified the viewers’ expectations as the 26th drew nearer.
Following the episodes’ debut, the season was met with eager praise and accolades, as the show effectively retained its ability to recapture the iconic suspense Stranger Things was known for. The conclusion of the volume that displayed the unexpected reveal of Will’s supernatural abilities left viewers excited for the next half of the season. The success raised the audience’s hopes for a satisfying, promising second volume, set to be released on Christmas Day.
When Dec. 25 arrived, however, the release of the last volume prompted a barrage of mixed reactions across social media. The volume contained pacing issues and confusing plotlines that contradicted a lot of established information revealed in earlier seasons. Freshman Layla Cole, a big Stranger Things fan, was especially disappointed with how certain characters were handled. She mentions a key problem within the volume and shares her opinion about certain flaws she noticed.
“The last few episodes focused more on [spectacle] and shock value from the big CGI fights instead of sorting out unfinished character arcs,” Cole said. “The entire [second volume] just felt unfinished to me.”
Shortly after the volume’s release on Christmas Day, the viewer base collectively hoped for a fulfilling ending to redeem such a beloved show. With years of plot development and emotional sentiment for its conclusion, expectations were heightened for all devoted viewers. The final episode was set to premiere on New Year’s Eve, and fans keenly awaited a satisfying ending.
Cole and her family, especially, were excited to experience the conclusion together as they celebrated the New Year. Unfortunately, the final episode left them underwhelmed and disappointed by its oddly paced and anticlimactic ending.
“I think it was very rushed,” Cole said. “When they were fighting the Mind Flayer, they beat it in four minutes. I feel the Mind Flayer has been a major opponent; the fight should have felt like the show’s climax, but it fell flat. Defeating Vecna that easily was not what I was expecting, and I feel like they could have done that longer.”
Freshman Rainge Morris shares his opinion on certain cinematic decisions within the conclusion. Eleven’s apparent death initially saddened him, yet her revealed survival lessened the psychological toll of her presumed passing.
“[At first], I was sad that Eleven died, but actually she really didn’t even die,” Morris said. “[She left] for a different country. I definitely feel Eleven should have stayed and fought the military [instead of leaving].”
Despite the show’s disappointing conclusion, many fans still appreciate the charm of the earlier seasons. Morris remembers and admires what made the series great. He comments on the characters’ lasting appeals and personalities.
“Even after watching the ending, I still consider the show successful,” Morris said. “The great thing about Stranger Things is how all the characters remind me of someone I know, and it’s so cool how [relatable they all are].”
Subtly placed details and ambiguous plot decisions led fans to speculate about a secret 9th episode, widely dubbed “Conformity Gate”. Many fans believed this secret episode was to be released on January 7, 2026. Ultimately, these theories proved unfounded as no episode was ever released. The creators later clarified the rumors were false and officially debunked the idea of a secret episode.
Even with an imperfect ending, Stranger Things’s long-lasting legacy will inspire future shows for its likeable characters and timeless moments. The show’s signature mixture of horror, 80’s classics, and familiar friendship brings a refreshing air of nostalgia within each episode. Cole reflects on the beauty of the series, and emphasizes the emotional impact as a whole, rather than just the finale.
“The finale was just one episode, so I’m not really taking that [into account that much]; the ending just disappointed me,” Cole said. “The overall show was really great. I loved each and every character, and honestly, I’ll really miss it.”
![ONE LAST RIDE The latest installment of Stranger Things has sparked controversy throughout the fan base for questionable creative decisions. Freshman Jordan Nguyen states his strong opinions on the conclusion. “I’d rate the show an 8,” Nguyen said. “The majority of the show was good. [Towards the end of the last season], it all just fell apart. A lot of questions were [left unanswered] and I was just disappointed.”](https://thescarletscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/HEIF-Image-9-1200x800.jpeg)
