Coach Rollinson stands with the team he created and his grandson Matthew at the game on Friday, Sept 2 versus Corona Centennial. The year 2023 serves as Coach Rollinson’s 34th year as Head Coach of the Monarch Football Team. He has led the team to win eight CIF Championships, four state titles, and the National Championship in 1994, 1996, 2017, 2018, and 2021. Rollinson loves to have his family with him at games, and the week prior when Mater Dei played Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas his grandson made a very important decision. “Matthew is seven and he looked at me and I say ‘What’s wrong?’ Rollinson said. “I knew he had apprehension and I didn’t want to force him and I didn’t want him to feel uncomfortable, it had to be his decision. And I wanted him to make that decision. He finally said, ‘I’m gonna do it.’ And I replied, ‘What are you gonna do?’ He said, ‘Can I be a ball boy?’ And I said, ‘Yes.’ He loved it. I mean, I’m sitting there going this is pretty cool. We are at a major football game and my grandson is the ball boy- life is good.”

BLAST FROM THE PAST: The Mater Dei student body assembles for one of the first times around Mary Mater Dei in the Grotto. In 1950, a Catholic women’s organization called the Young Ladies Institute generously donated a statue of Mary, the same statue that blesses the Grotto today. The school quickly adopted Mary as its patroness and gave her a prime position in the center of the Grotto. “There was always a grotto,” Talarico said. “But Mary was in the middle. Raesjon Davis stands on the walkway on campus deemed “Heisman Lane” after former Monarch football players and Heisman Award Winners John Huarte (1964) and Matt Leinart (2004). Past Monarchs such as Huarte and Leinart inspire Davis and other current football players to create their own legacies at Mater Dei and beyond. “They just showed us the way and how to be real Monarchs,” Davis said.

READY, SET, FOOTBALL: The Mater Dei football team started their season opener on Aug. 23 against Corona Centennial at the Santa Ana Stadium. It was the very first game of the 2019 season following a back-to-back CIF state championship win last year. At the end of the game, the Monarchs celebrated a victory against Centennial with the score of 42-12. “The start of the season has been amazing,” senior captain Dean Neely said. ...Everyone is playing fast and doing their jobs.”

RING SEASON: Junior offensive lineman Myles Murao and junior defensive lineman Martin Salazar hug it out after finally defeating the Bosco Braves. Murao was injured in a game earlier this season and won’t be able to play until his senior year. “We really hurt when we lost the time before and for it to come full circle and for us to finally beat Bosco is a great feeling,” Young said.
