Mekala Valentin, Culture editor

Mekala Valentin is a sophomore at Mater Dei High School and this is her second year being on staff for The Scarlet Scroll. This year, she has taken the position of culture editor. Valentin is involved in a number of things which include MUN, ASB, CSF, NHS, swim team, and multiple clubs. When Valentin is not participating in school activities, you can find her watching Netflix with her sister, swimming for her club team ORCA, or simply living in the moment.

LAST HURRAH: While the class of 2019 is doing there final Alma Mater, Senior Nathaniel Almendral decided to make this last one count. He proceeded to jump into the crowd and get lifted by his classmates and friends. The saddened seniors soon became much more cheery and smiles spread across the crowds face.

TIGHT SHIFT: New baseball coach Richard Mercado makes the frosh-soph team run together in consequence of a poor performance on the field. Even in the toughest times, Mercado’s biggest objective is that everything the teams do is done together. "I want them competing for each other and build that team unity and family spirit that I grew a custom here at MD," he said.

A student club hosted an activity during which students could stamp their thumbprints to created a tree. The tree is a symbol prosperity and unity, both values celebrated during Lunar New Year, in the Monarch family.

AUTHENTIC ACTIVITIES: Students were able to participate in many Lunar New Year inspired games in Shamrock Plaza like gambling with candy and learning calligraphy.

In order to be a team, you must get to know and eventually trust your team members. While practicing, staying positive is key because it is uplifting to not only you, but your team members as well. Nothing but smiles from Freshman Kaitlyn Staats and Ashley Nguyen during practice.

NET-WORKING: The girls freshman volleyball team work together to prepare for this year's season. So far, the frosh/soph girls playing record is 6-2.

TEAMWORK: The frosh/soph team huddles before a scrimmage match. "We are really close, almost like a family and we truly play better because of that," freshman Fiona Waldron said.

Being a part of a team means coming and working together. Everyone must play there role to the best of there ability. Here, Coach Reese is showing the girls how to improve there bumping skills.
