Mia Hawkins, Editor-in-Chief

Mia Hawkins is a senior at Mater Dei and is the 2019-2020 Editor-in-Chief of The Scarlet Scroll. Aside from working on the newspaper, Hawkins is the Senior Class Co-Vice President, an AP/Honors student, a member of CSF, NHS, the Quill and Scroll  Honor Society, as well as club president to the Journalism Club and Animal Rights Club. One thing she is most excited for this year is the change The Scarlet Scroll is making by switching from a traditional newspaper to a modern newsmagazine. During her last year of high school, she not only looks forward to making memories with her friends but also hopes to bring positive change to the campus as well as help continue to improve the student publications program through collaboration and by creating a cozy and successful newsroom environment.

GLOW IN THE DANCE: In their team debut, All Female performed at The Homecoming Showcase Night Rally on Oct. 10. “I don’t care if you can dance [or] if you have taken a class one time, anybody can dance,” senior Faith McGrath said. “If you can get up and more your body if you can move anything at all you can dance.”

READY, SET, FOOTBALL: The Mater Dei football team started their season opener on Aug. 23 against Corona Centennial at the Santa Ana Stadium. It was the very first game of the 2019 season following a back-to-back CIF state championship win last year. At the end of the game, the Monarchs celebrated a victory against Centennial with the score of 42-12. “The start of the season has been amazing,” senior captain Dean Neely said. ...Everyone is playing fast and doing their jobs.”

STEP BY STEP: The All-Male Dance Team finishes off the rally with their routine. The All-Male Dance Team is always the last performance of the rally, a part students look forward to. "Performing with All Male is one of the most exhilarating feelings I've experienced. Not because of the crowd's reaction, or who is necessarily watching us, but because I know everyone on that stage loves what they are doing." Senior Louis Salcedo said.

SPINNING AND TWIRLING: The Cheer Team hypes up the students as they enter the Meruelo Athletic Center, getting everyone into school spirit. The Fall Sports Rally celebrates and wishes luck to all fall sport athletes for their seasons.

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT: Nighttime view of the Pixar Pal-A-Round and the Incredicoaster. The lights along the Pixar Pier shine bright before the start of the after hours event, World of Color, which is held in California Adventure.

Senior Brooks Massey is awarded the Golden Paw Award by Jeanette Costa, the associate director of student activities. The award is given to the ASB student who gets the most points throughout the school year. Points can be received by attending games, performances, and various events.

Grimm shows the student a a Vietnam booklet that was given to all the soldiers. This booklet helped soldiers understand the culture and location in where they were stationed. "I still have the original booklet and it says 'Welcome to Vietnam,'" Grimm told the students. "Basically, [it showed the] customs of the Vietnamese people. They wanted us to understand the customs even though we were entering into a battle zone."

Murao was injured in a game earlier this season and won’t be able to play until his senior year. “We really hurt when we lost the time before and for it to come full circle and for us to finally beat Bosco is a great feeling,” Young said.

STRESS, TESTS, EXAMS, OH MY: For majority of students it seems that stress is kicked into high gear around this time of year. According to a poll sent out to the student body, it was discovered that 63% of students become more stressed during finals week.

COACH’S ORDERS: Juniors Kyla Martinsen and Sofia Zerza work together  during their block 8 to create the rooming list for the varsity boys basketball tournament that will take place in Santa Barbara. Tasks like this are standard for the team managers. “Coach will write stuff up for us, and then we basically type them into a computer and print them out," Zerza said. Many team managers hope to pursue athletic management in the future. “I would love to be an administrative assistant for basketball in college," Martinsen said. “I have always been a huge basketball fan. This job has helped me learn all the technical sides of the sport."

HONOR, GLORY, LOVE: To conclude the Fall Sports Rally, ASB officers join together to sing the Alma Mater. "...overall it [the rally] went fairly smoothly and I'm really pleased with how it ended. I'm really pleased with how it ended. I'm really excited to get started on the next one," Van Dalsem said.

DINERO, DINERO: The dance teams perform to "Dinero" by Jennifer Lopez, choreographed by coach Kristina Marquez. The use of the money dispenser was to bring the song to life through props along with dance. "We wanted to leave a lasting impression on the audience and get the crowd pumped up for the rest of the school year," Marquez said.

CIRCUS ON WHEELS: Senior Sofia Galindo and junior Anne-marie Verkuylen roll around in tiny tricycles as they participate in the relay event that featured various fall sport athletes.

ROCK & ROLL: Coach Bruce Rollinson makes remarks about the football season, encouraging students to dress in red, white, and blue in honor of Labor Day for their game against La Mirada game.
