Coach Rollinson stands with the team he created and his grandson Matthew at the game on Friday, Sept 2 versus Corona Centennial. The year 2023 serves as Coach Rollinson’s 34th year as Head Coach of the Monarch Football Team. He has led the team to win eight CIF Championships, four state titles, and the National Championship in 1994, 1996, 2017, 2018, and 2021. Rollinson loves to have his family with him at games, and the week prior when Mater Dei played Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas his grandson made a very important decision. “Matthew is seven and he looked at me and I say ‘What’s wrong?’ Rollinson said. “I knew he had apprehension and I didn’t want to force him and I didn’t want him to feel uncomfortable, it had to be his decision. And I wanted him to make that decision. He finally said, ‘I’m gonna do it.’ And I replied, ‘What are you gonna do?’ He said, ‘Can I be a ball boy?’ And I said, ‘Yes.’ He loved it. I mean, I’m sitting there going this is pretty cool. We are at a major football game and my grandson is the ball boy- life is good.”

ABOUT TO SWING: Senior Ryder Henares lines up with the hole to try to sink it in the first swing. Henares and the varsity golf team started the Trinity League this month, which included this match against JSerra. “We had a feeling we were going to have a season because golf is already a socially distant sport,” Henares said. “However, everyone was excited when the news got out.”

SAFETY FIRST: For teams to maintain a safe environment, school administration and the athletic department instated the following policies: Upon entering campus, students would have their temperatures checked, athletes would be required to wear a mask when they enter, but can take them off during socially-distanced drills. The athletics department posted a checklist and video on their Instagram explaining what the students need to be allowed back on campus.

RING SEASON: Junior offensive lineman Myles Murao and junior defensive lineman Martin Salazar hug it out after finally defeating the Bosco Braves. Murao was injured in a game earlier this season and won’t be able to play until his senior year. “We really hurt when we lost the time before and for it to come full circle and for us to finally beat Bosco is a great feeling,” Young said.
