Lillian (Lilly) Ashworth is a senior at Mater Dei and the Editor-in-Chief for The Scarlet Scroll. This is her third year on staff and her second year as an editor. Lilly is planning on majoring in journalism next year, and wants to enter the field after college. Outside of newspaper, Lilly is a Lead Producer for Every Dei and has a segment on the show, Sonic Boom, that focuses on reviewing music. She is also the founder and president of the Treat People With Kindness Club that aims to create a safe space on campus for students to go during office hours. Lilly is looking forward to a great last year at Mater Dei, and is very excited to share her love for journalism to both the newspaper staff and the entire school.

NEW FACE OF MATER DEI: Michael Brennan was announced the new president of Mater Dei High School on Jan. 7, 2022. After long-time president Patrick Murphy retired, the position was held by Father Steve Sallot before Father Walter Jenkins was hired. After Jenkins returned to Notre Dame for a special assignment, Brennan applied for and received the position and has now been part of the Mater Dei community for over a year.

BEHIND THE CAMERA: Genova, working as Floor Director, positions the two on-camera anchors while setting up for the show. The Floor Director controls the room that houses the camera crew and anchors and helps communicate with the control room. Throughout her years in the program, Genova has experienced each role, but favors directing and mentoring others. “When we shoot the show everyone spreads out and goes to different stations, either in the control room or the studio room,” Genova said. “We have one director for each room that communicates to run [both of] the rooms.”

THE DEN: The Mater Dei student section celebrates a touchdown during the Varsity game versus La Mirada. Students from every grade level make their way to the Santa Ana Bowl in order to support their fellow Monarchs. “It feels so exciting to cheer on a team that’s winning,” yell leader and senior Gina Genova said. “You can barely hear yourself because everyone is screaming with you.” (Photo courtesy of Rachel O’Sullivan)
