Nathaniel Calilung is a senior at Mater Dei and the Content Editor for The Scarlet Scroll. When he is not reporting for the Scroll, Calilung also serves as the president of the Model United Nations Club, a debater for the Junior States of America Club, a head Scarlet Ambassador, a founding member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Task Force, and much more. In his free-time, he likes to volunteer at his local parish, listen to music, read, and follow Asian-American pop culture trends.

AWARDS IN THE ARTS: Assistant Principal of Academics and Technology Molly Chace hands senior Anthony Duilio his Renaissance Award. ORDER-UP: During a busy lunch period, senior Ruby Meija helps fulfill orders in the kitchen by grabbing food while the cashier takes orders. Even though this fast process may be stressful to some, Meija manages to do her job because of the many advantages it gives her. “I think you should really get involved [with Sodexo] because it [benefits] those students who [...] need extra help with financial aid. It not only provides service hours and [...] free lunches, [but you also get to] meet different people.”

WORKING FOR THE PRESS: Kristen Castillo ‘18 sports Arizona State University’s signature “forks up” sign in The State Press newsroom. After graduation, Castillo chose to join The State Press as a staff reporter, and appreciates the experience she received while at Mater Dei. “[Running a newspaper in college] is the same exact situation,” Castillo said. “[The newspaper] is completely student run. We are at the expense of our peers, which is really cool.”

RESEARCH AND REALIZATIONS: Senior Emily Lynch spends time editing and writing her final research paper for AP Research. In this course, students are required to write a formal paper on a problem or topic of their choosing. “So far, my research and data collection has been progressing well,” Lynch said. “However, there is a lot more work to be done, especially before the big deadline in May.”

GATHERED AS ONE: During Winter Walk in Faith, seniors, along with the Director of Liturgical Music Steve Viau, gathered together to sing worship songs at the beginning of the retreat. Group activities such as singing songs and playing games were used to introduce and familiarize each student to their fellow retreat members. “That was the first time we all got together,” senior Tallulah Rehder said. “But as soon as we got together into a smaller group and started talking, it was so much more fun.”
